Histon and Impington Action for Older People (HIAFOP) was the direct result of an Older Peoples forum held in October 2010. This forum is an independent group with its own terms of reference and membership, but it has strong links to relevant groups and the village parish councils. Members include Age UK Village Warden and the Firs Surgery Practice Manager.
After consultations with the parish councils, it was agreed that a Village Older Persons’ Coordinator (VOPC) be appointed under the auspices of the Histon and Impington Community Minibus (HICOM) and the first appointment was made in June 2011. HICOM is a well established local charity, with its own strong links within the community and a range of expertise within its trustees and management team.
The VOPC aimed to address issues:
- For the increasing number of older people in the community, with many resident in new developments;
- For the increasing number of elderly being encouraged to remain in their own homes;
- Arising from reduction in wardens in sheltered units;
- Arising from feelings of isolation and loneliness.
The VOPC set out to develop the enterprise and establish links with all the existing organisations working within the community.
You can see some case studies arising from this early work.
In 2016 HICOM changed its name to Histon & Impington Community to reflect the activities it undertakes in addition to its original minibus provision, and a co-ordinator was employed to allow us to develop these activities further.
In 2018 the Village Older Persons’ Coordinator retired and an Older People’s Worker role was created to move the project forwards.
